Alan Ross Mackie - December 20, 1943 – July 5, 2026

Alan Ross Mackie, 82, of Amesbury, MA and formerly of North Towanda, PA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 5, 2026.

Alan was born in Philadelphia, PA on December 20, 1943, son of the late Charles Scott Mackie and Esther Craven Mackie.

He graduated from Frankford High School in Philadelphia, Class of 1961, and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Metallurgical Engineering from Drexel Institute of Technology, Class of 1968. While at Drexel, he did a co-op in Towanda, PA. He remained there until retirement from Osram Sylvania. After retirement, he was a courier for a local hospital network.

On June 8, 1968, Alan married the late Linda Lee Cathers at the Bala Cynwyd United Methodist Church, where her father was the pastor. The couple moved to Towanda to make their home, where they had 49 wonderful years of marriage. Alan and Linda enjoyed traveling, particularly golf trips with friends and family. Alan digitized many family pictures, with slideshows displayed on their home computer.

In Towanda, Alan was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church of Towanda, where he was a member of the choir, served as a Trustee, and Finance Committee Chairperson, among other leadership positions. He was a long-time member of the Towanda Country Club, playing for more than 40 years in the Tuesday Sylvania Golf League. In 2016, he was the Senior Club Champion. Additional activities were bowling and volunteering with the Towanda Little League.

After Linda’s death in 2017, Alan moved to Amesbury, MA to be closer to his sons and grandchildren. He joined the Main Street Congregational Church, primarily due to its music program. He sang in the church choir, joined a barbershop chorus, The Gentlemen Songsters, and sang inspirational music with Voices, a choral group led by the church music director.

Alan enjoyed watching his grandchildren in their various activities. He continued to play golf, learned candlepin bowling, and especially enjoyed playing cards with his friends. Alan was a lifelong Philadelphia sports fan, especially the Phillies and Eagles.

His surviving family includes his sons and daughter’s in-law, Thomas and Donna of Amesbury, MA, Scott and Beatrice of Bolton, MA, grandchildren Charles and Sarah, sisters Nancy (Robert) Figge and Carolyn (Wayne) Hoagland and sister in-law Patricia Fetterolf.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 17, 2026, at 1PM at the Marryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Avenue, Towanda. Visitation will begin at noon, and internment will follow at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Towanda. A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, July 19, 2026, at 2PM at Main Street Congregational Church, 145 Main Street, Amesbury, MA. Thank you to Paul C. Rogers Funeral Home for handling arrangements in Amesbury.

Alan was kind, intelligent, had a lovely tenor voice, quick, sharp wit, and an unending devotion to Linda. He loved animals, and in lieu of flowers, the family asks you to remember Alan by supporting your local animal rescue or animal-assisted therapy location.
