After a joyous celebration of her 97th birthday on Sunday December 21st, Beverly Mae (Bush) Hill, of Newburyport, MA, passed on Christmas Day morning, December 25, 2025, at her home, surrounded by her loving family. She was predeceased by her husband, Harry Belmont Hill, Jr., who passed on November 28, 1987.
Born in Baltic, CT on December 20, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Grant Loomer Bush and Anna (Firth) Bush. After her mom died when Beverly was three she was cared for by a loving family during the Great Depression. Always a wonderful student, interested in education, she graduated from Malden High School Class of 1946. Beverly went on to Radcliffe College (now part of Harvard), but paused her education when she married Harry and began raising a family. She returned to studies during the 1960’s, first at UNH, and then graduating in 1969 from Salem State Teaching College. She was a beloved elementary school teacher in Newburyport Public Schools until her retirement in 1993, teaching 2nd and 4th graders in the Kelly, Davenport and Belleville/Bresnahan Schools, fulfilling her passionate goal since she was a child.
Beverly was a longtime parishioner of Peoples United Methodist Church, actively involved as a Sunday School Teacher, church Lay Leader in 1997 and as a long time Soprano in the Church Choir. In 1990 she added her voice and passion to the Newburyport Choral Society. For many years she was also a Docent at the Cushing House Historical Society of Old Newbury.
With her husband Harry, Beverly enjoyed travel, especially to their favorite city of London. Together they shared a passion for history and the Arts (both graphic and performance), as well as collecting antiques, autographs and original art.
She will be lovingly remembered by her son, John R. Hill and wife Liann Graf of Newburyport; her two daughters, Sarah Jeanette Hill of Hampton, NH and Elizabeth Hill-Elser and husband Veit Elser of Ithaca, NY; her grandchildren, whom she loved dearly and who love her back just as dearly and called her “Beama”: Audra, Jared, Nicholas, Malia, Martha, Tillman, Toby, Celine and Stephen; and her great-grandchildren: Colton, Ash, Hunter, Zoe, Myles, Owen and Max, along with extended families, dear friends, fellow teachers, artists, musicians, and so many others who were touched by her warm and gentle spirit, her beautiful blue eyes and passionate smile. In addition to her parents and her devoted husband Harry, she was predeceased by her step-mother, Edith Bush, her daughter, Martha Jean Hill who passed in 1970, and her step-brother, Arthur Schofield.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, January 1, 2026 from 2 to 6 P.M. at Elliott, Woodworth and Rogers Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, Newburyport, MA 01950. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, January 2, 2026 at 10:00 AM at the Peoples United Methodist Church, 64 Purchase Street, Newburyport, MA 01950 followed by a brief reception in the church, and a Graveside Service at Oak Hill Cemetery at about noon, where Beverly will be laid to eternal rest beside her dear husband, Harry, and their daughter Martha.
