Gordon H. Andrews, age 93, lifetime resident of Newburyport, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday afternoon, June 27, 2025, after a period of declining health. He was the beloved husband of the late Jane A. (Chase) Andrews, who passed on December 22, 2021.

Born in Newburyport, August 7, 1931, he was the son of the late Hudson and Edith (Colby) Andrews.

A graduate of Newburyport High School, Gordon was a proud veteran of the United States Navy, honorably discharged on December 8, 1955 at the rank of Radioman Third Class. Returning home after his military service, Gordon became a firefighter for the Newburyport Fire Department for 36 years and at the time of his retirement, he had earned the rank of Deputy Fire Chief. Gordon also served several years as president of the Golden Age Club of Newburyport.

Gordon married Jane in 1964, and they were happily married for 57 years. Later in life, he and Jane had the privilege of raising Jane’s great granddaughter Amy. The three traveled extensively together including driving cross country twice and numerous trips to Disney World where his favorite ride was Thunder Mountain Railroad.

Gordon had a big heart and a wonderful sense of humor. His family, friends, and neighbors loved being in his company and will miss him dearly. As he neared the end of his life, he always inquired about how his loved ones were doing. Even in his final weeks, he took the time to write a get well card to a dear friend. He had an affinity for animals, not only the pets he had over the years but also the local wildlife. Gordon spent much time with Amy keeping track of the resident woodchuck family that lived in his yard. He also had a deep love for Amy’s dog, Sheba, and found great amusement in receiving high fives from her.

He is survived by his sister, Pauline Smith of Kansas, step-children Jacqueline Cadell, Thomas Shepard and wife, Diane, Stephen Shepard and wife, Pamela, grandchildren Zachary Shepard, Ben Shute and husband, Steve Griswold, Meghan Shepard and partner, Joe Papp, Adam Shepard and partner, Karina Johnson, Chloe Shepard and fiancé, Dave DeCenzo, and Donna Cadell, and great-grandchildren, Amy Dziewit and husband, Timothy, AJ Cadell, Drew Papp, Nora Papp, and Calista Shepard, niece Ledria Heater and husband, Randy, nephew Paul Smith and wife, Denise, and nephew Robert Smith, and his dear friends Frank and Janet. He was predeceased by his wife, Jane, two brothers, George and Burton Andrews, his sister, Evelyn Bryant, his step-son Paul Shepard, and grandson Andy Cadell.

Visiting hours will be held on Monday, July 7, 2025 from 10 A.M. to 12 P.M. at Elliott, Woodworth, & Rogers Family Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, Newburyport, immediately followed by services at the funeral home, then a Graveside Service at Oak Hill Cemetery, Newburyport, where Gordon and Jane will be laid to eternal rest.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Gordon’s honor to the New Hampshire SPCA (https://nhspca.org), an organization that meant a lot to Gordon and that he supported throughout the years.
