Henry Joseph Mies ("Joe"), of Merrimac, Massachusetts, passed away on June 20, 2026, after a brief illness.

Joe proudly served in the United States Marine Corps, including a tour in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968. Following his military service, he built a long career with General Electric, where he worked until his retirement in 2006.

On October 24, 1970, Joe married the love of his life, Janet Searles. Together they shared 55 years of marriage filled with love, laughter, and adventure. Born in Winthrop, Massachusetts, Joe raised his family in Newburyport before he and Janet retired to Florida in 2006.

Retirement opened the door to many adventures. Joe and Janet checked countless destinations off their bucket list, including multiple trips throughout Europe and a memorable journey to Alaska. The stories from those travels became treasured memories and were shared often for years to come.

Joe was a devoted father who raised two sons and created a lifetime of memories with his family. Summers were often spent camping at Papoose Pond and throughout the foothills of the White Mountains. His sons fondly remember weekends spent working on engines alongside their dad, Boy Scout camping trips, and the many lessons he taught through hard work and example.

In addition to his beloved wife, Janet, Joe leaves behind his "Southern Mieses": son Jason (Dana) Mies of Florida, and grandchildren Jadan and Kendall, who knew him as "Grampy." He is also survived by his "Northern Mieses": son Eric (Maralee) Mies of Massachusetts, and grandchildren Jake and Ellee, who lovingly called him "Bubba." Joe is further survived by his sister, Melinda Curis, and his brother, Jonathan (Heidi) Mies.

No services are planned. Instead, we ask that you honor Joe's memory with donation to the Dana-Farber Jimmy Fund.
