James Edward Gormley

d. December 9, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James Edward Gormley, a beloved resident of Newbury, MA, who passed away on Saturday morning, December 9, 2023, at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers.

Born in Presque Isle, Maine, August 3, 1950, he was the son of the lateJoseph and Pauline (Hussey) Gormley, and was a graduate of Pentucket Regional High School in West Newbury, Class of 1968.

James worked as a welder for many years, and his proud handiwork can be found in many buildings around the Merrimack Valley. He was a consummate handyman and could build or fix just about anything.

In his retirement, he enjoyed walking the beach with his faithful companion, Penny the pug, and relished the simple pleasures of going out for coffee, talking politics, listening to live music, and being outdoors. A lover of nature, he cared deeply about the environment and had a green thumb.
Jim had an adventurous spirit and loved to explore new places. He was an avid scuba diver in his younger days, and had many stories of camping solo in the mountains.

Those who knew Jim would say that he was a generous, kind and loyal friend, always willing to lend a hand. He was a loving husband to his wife and soulmate, the late Susan (Webb) Gormley, with whom he shared 42 wonderful years. He was also a dedicated father to his son, Patrick Gormley, and daughter, Amelia Gormley, and delighted in spending time with his only granddaughter, Aida Muse Gormley. James cherished every moment spent with his family and always prioritized their happiness.

James will be deeply missed by his two brothers, Joseph Gormley, Jr. and Calvin Gormley, and their respective spouses, Yvonne and Nancy, along with his nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.

Calling hours will be held at Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Family Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, Newburyport on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, from 4-8 PM. In memory of James, donations can be made to the Greater Newbury Elder Pet Fund.
