Joanne C. (Lavoie) Stanton, age 87, a longtime resident of Newburyport, passed peacefully at her home, surrounded by her loving family. She was the devoted wife of the late Donald J. Stanton (Michael), who predeceased her in 1998.
Born in Haverhill on February 15, 1939, Joanne was one of seven children of the late Roland and Florence (Kelso) Lavoie. She was a graduate of the Immaculate Conception School.
Joanne cherished the time she spent with her husband, Mike. Together, they enjoyed evenings out with friends, sharing dinners, dancing, and creating memories that she treasured throughout her life.
Joanne worked as a hairdresser in Haverhill and Newburyport, before later holding a variety of other occupations throughout her life. She truly enjoyed the Bingo Fundraiser for Newburyport Youth Hockey and attending all of her son’s hockey games. In later years, supporting her grandchildren at all their sporting events, school activities and dance recitals. Above all, she was devoted to her family and treasured the time she spent with them.
She is lovingly survived by her son, Michael P. Stanton and his wife, Michele McKeon Stanton, of Newburyport; their children, Madison Barnes and her husband, Thomas, of Amesbury, along with their children, Trey and Isabella Barnes; Molly Stanton and her fiancé, Maximilian Bradshaw, of Mooresville, North Carolina; and Meghan Shane and her husband, Brendan, of Amesbury. She is also survived by her daughter, Michele Stanton of Newburyport; her children, Ashley Denton and her husband, Chad, of Louisville, Kentucky, and Scott Simmons of Newburyport; her sister-in-law, Cindy Lavoie; along with many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
In addition to her husband and parents, Joanne was predeceased by her brothers, Phillip, Ronald, Norman, and Robert Lavoie, and her sisters, Sandra Thurlow and Claudette Haley.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Monday, July 13, 2026 at 11:00 A.M. at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 42 Green Street, Newburyport, followed by a graveside service at St. Mary’s Cemetery, where Joanne will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated physicians, nurses, hospice team, and caregivers whose compassion, kindness, and exceptional care brought comfort and dignity to Joanne throughout her illness. Your support will never be forgotten.
