John Greenleaf Tagney

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of John Greenleaf Tagney, who died peacefully on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at the age of 57.

Born and raised in West Newbury, John was the beloved son of the late Ronald N. Tagney and Brooke Clark Tagney. He shared a special bond with his father, with whom he ran a cherished Christmas tree farm for many years—a place that brought joy to countless families and reflected John’s love of nature and community.

John was a passionate musician, known for his talent and joy in playing live guitar. His music was a source of connection and comfort to those around him, and he never missed an opportunity to share a song or a story.

He pursued his academic interests at the University of New Hampshire, where he studied forestry, and later at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, where he studied business. His diverse interests reflected a curious and creative spirit, always eager to learn and grow.

John had recently celebrated eight years of sobriety, a milestone that reflected his strength, resilience, and commitment to personal growth. His journey inspired many and was a testament to his enduring spirit.

John is survived by his loving sister Lisa Whitney and her husband George, as well as his nephew George Whitney and niece Ellie Whitney, who will forever remember his warmth, humor, and generous heart. He also leaves behind numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends who were touched by his kindness and authenticity.

A celebration of life will be held at the West Newbury Congregational Church at a date and time to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s memory to Maudslay Arts Center, MAC/Costello Inc., 182 Whitehall Rd., Amesbury, MA 01913. John’s legacy lives on in the music he played, the trees he nurtured, and the lives he enriched. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
