It is with great sadness that we share the passing of John Foster Wallace, age 66, who passed away peacefully at home on Friday, May 23rd, 2025, after a long illness.
A lifelong resident of Merrimac, John grew up in Merrimacport, where he spent his youth playing and working alongside his beloved grandfather Ray Wallace and his father Wilbur “Web” Wallace at the family-owned boatyard. That boatyard would later become John’s own, proudly run alongside his son, Jake.
John was a 1977 graduate of Pentucket Regional High School. He was an accomplished athlete, playing on the football team and becoming a New England Champion Wrestler.
John was a highly skilled master craftsman who worked for himself building homes, including his family’s post-and-beam home completed in 1987. He was best known for his expert finish carpentry — especially his beautiful staircases and mantels, which became his signature work. He also carved custom wooden pieces for loved ones, such as walking canes, wooden garden gnomes, and wedding centerpieces for his son and niece .
John is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Sheila Wallace (Roy) ; his son Jacob Wallace and daughter-in-law Genna Wallace; and his treasured grandchildren, Mila, Sawyer, and Robin Wallace, who brought him immense pride and joy.
He is also survived by his in-laws: Gerry & Cindy Roy, Cindy & Bob Haskell, Darlene & Mike Sieczkowski, and Eddy & Michele Roy; as well as many nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends, all of whom he loved dearly.
John was predeceased by his parents, Wilbur “Web” and Geraldine Wallace; his brother David “Bongo” Wallace; his sister Debbie Albee; and his in-laws Gerard and Jean Roy.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to a charity of your choice in John’s memory.
Per his wishes, there will be no calling hours.
