Mildred McElwaine

Newburyport - Mildred McElwaine of Newburyport, passed away peacefully after a life defined by kindness, faith, lifelong learning, and service to others.

Born on July 24, 1927 in Livonia, NY, she was the daughter of Mildred Elizabeth Cooper, a teacher, and Edwin Riley Nesbit, a blacksmith and construction worker. She often spoke with great affection about her idyllic childhood in the countryside. Despite growing up during the Great Depression, she treasured the simple joys of family life, adventures with her siblings, and the enduring love that shaped her early years.

She attended Keuka College before beginning work as an assistant to a psychologist in Rochester, New York. That experience awakened a lifelong interest in human development and helping others. During those years, she welcomed her beloved children, David and Deborah. Although her first marriage ended in divorce, life brought her another great blessing when her son David introduced her to Clayton McElwaine. They married and shared more than three decades of devoted partnership until his passing. Together they welcomed their daughter, Barbara.

For 62 years, Newburyport was her home. She earned a degree in early childhood education from Salem State College and devoted decades to teaching young children at the Round School and Woodbridge School in Newbury. She believed every child deserved encouragement, patience, and the opportunity to grow, and she touched the lives of countless students and their families throughout her career.

Her Christian faith was the foundation of her life. As a longtime member of Central Congregational Church, she served faithfully in many capacities, including as a deacon, on the pastoral search committee, in Women's Fellowship, and as a grief counselor. She found deep purpose in supporting others through both joyful and difficult seasons of life.

She found happiness in her family, tending her garden, and continually learning new things. Endlessly curious, she approached the world with an open mind and genuine interest in others. She will be remembered as a kind, thoughtful, and supportive person whose gentle wisdom and generous spirit enriched the lives of all who knew her.

She was predeceased by her husband, Clayton; and by her siblings, Rile and Flora, and her beloved grandson, Jason.

She is lovingly survived by her three children, David, Deborah, and Barbara; eight grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; her much loved sister, Elinor; and many cherished nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

Her legacy lives on in the generations she nurtured, the students she inspired, the faith she practiced, and the countless acts of kindness she shared throughout her life. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

Inurnment will be private. A memorial service will be announced by the family when details are set.
