Peter Furber Hickey, 73, of Newburyport, MA, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2025 at the High Pointe House in Haverhill, after a period of declining health.
Born on March 7, 1952, Peter was the beloved son of Thomas R. and Louise F. Hickey. He was predeceased by his wife, Pamela Hickey, with whom he shared 35 years of marriage filled with joy and laughter.
Peter graduated from Ithaca College. He built a long career in retail management, most recently with Lowe’s, where he was respected for his dedication and work ethic. Beyond his professional life, he believed in giving back to his community, volunteering many hours to Habitat for Humanity, Merrimack River Feline Rescue, and Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. He was a proud Board Member of the Friends of the Parker River NWR .
Peter is survived by his twin brother, William R. Hickey of Newburyport, and his sisters, Louisa A. Van Citters (Wayne) of North Hampton NH, and Janet E. Hickey (Mike Halay) of Newbury. He also leaves many nieces, nephews and their children, who thought the world of Uncle Pete.
He will be remembered for his love of family, passion for boating, and daily trips to the Refuge on Plum Island. where he found peace and inspiration.
Visiting Hours will be Thursday, October 9th from 5:00-7:00 PM at the Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Funeral Home 35 Green Street Newburyport. Interment will be private. A gathering to celebrate Pete will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in his memory to the Friends of the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge or the Custom House Maritime Museum in Newburyport.
