Richard “Rico” John Triandafilou, 72, a lifelong resident of Newburyport, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2026, shortly after celebrating his birthday on St. Patrick’s Day.
Born in Newburyport on March 17, 1954, Richard was the son of the late Theodore Nicholas Triandafilou, Sr. and Dorothy Preston (Hunter) Triandafilou. Richard was deeply committed to his family and the preservation of their shared history.
Richard dedicated much of his professional life to the fencing industry, continuing a legacy established by his grandfather, Nicolas, and his father in Newburyport during the early 1940s. Throughout his career, he worked alongside both of his brothers, embodying a belief in the dignity of hard work and the strength of family ties.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Richard was a man of diverse talents and passions. A gifted storyteller, accomplished woodworker, and talented musician, he found great joy in playing the bass guitar and sharing history with those around him. He was also known for his profound kindness toward animals and his steadfast presence within the Seacoast community, notably serving for 11 years as the President of the Newburyport Yankee Homecoming Committee.
He is survived by his brothers, Ted Triandafilou, Jr. of Seabrook, NH, and Jay Triandafilou of Salisbury, MA. He also leaves behind his devoted and loving friend, Joanne McNicol of Salem, NH. His legacy continues through his nephews, Ted Triandafilou, III, and his wife, Mindy, of Dover, NH; Dan Triandafilou and his wife, Sinead, of Shrewsbury, MA; and his niece, Jaycee Triandafilou. He was the proud great-uncle to Vera, Alexander, Ava, and Nora, all of whom will cherish his memory. Richard also leaves behind his faithful feline companion, Shadow, who remained a constant presence by his side since kittenhood.
Family and friends are invited to honor Richard’s life at a funeral service on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at 11:00 AM at The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 7 Harris St, Newburyport. Interment will follow at Belleville Cemetery, 26 Storey Avenue, Newburyport, MA 01950.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Richard’s memory to the MSPCA at Nevins Farm in Methuen, MA, an organization that reflects his lifelong love for animals.
