Wallace Woodland “Chip” Butt, Jr., 85, of South Hampton, NH, died peacefully on November 5, 2025. Born in Amesbury, MA, on July 5, 940, he was the firstborn son of the late Wallace and Eunice (Tuxbury) Butt and was a graduate of Amesbury High School.
Chip was naturally drawn to the great outdoors and its sports. With a dog frequently at his side, he was most at home in the woodlands and wetlands of Northern Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire. His interest in hunting, fishing, and trapping drew him deeper into the New England wilderness, and he later participated in a number of hunting expeditions out west and in Canada. Many of his deer, waterfowl, and upland game prizes were artfully preserved and displayed at his home. He was a skilled marksman, and shared a special bond with his cousin Kraig Pilon, passing on his wisdom in the field of hunting, fishing, and trapping.
Chip worked for many companies, including Puma Construction Co, as a union carpenter. Upon his retirement from Puma, he worked for many years at Bartley Machine and Manufacturing in Amesbury. He was a long-time member of Country Pond Fish and Game Club in Newton, NH as well as the Katahdin Club of Amesbury.
He was predeceased by his wife of nearly 50 years, Phyllis A. Butt and his brother, Duncan Butt.
He is survived by his sister-in-law Diane Butt; niece, Melinda Russo and husband John, all of Middleton, MA; his nephew, Christopher Davis of Edmond, Oklahoma and his son Aidan; great-niece, Rachel Maus, and great-nephews, David Maus, Jeffrey Maus and his wife (Bailey) and their two sons, Jackson and Grayson, as well as many cousins and friends.
Friends and family are invited to an open house at Chip and Phyllis’ residence at 71 Chase Road, South Hampton, NH on Sunday, November 16, 2025 from 12 PM-3 PM to honor his and Phyllis’ life.
